STANDARD WILL
This is a will to cover straight-forward situations but it is thorough and can include:
· specific gifts and legacies
· appointing guardianship
· funeral wishes
· leaving the remainder of the estate to one or more person
· reserve beneficiaries
· wipe-out beneficiaries (if you wish)
PROTECTION WILL
This will includes everything in the ‘Standard Will’ but it has one trust added to cover more complex situations such as:
- If your spouse remarries after your death – ensure that your money won’t go to the new spouse and their family – making sure your money stays with your family.
- If you have children from a previous relationship – ensuring that they eventually get your money but at the same time looking after your current spouse/partner.

Trusts are used for a number of reasons. They help you maintain control over your assets after your death. They are used to cover such issues as:
· Providing for a disabled child/person and preventing them from losing benefits or Local Authority funding stopped for having a large inheritance.
· Providing for a vulnerable person – ie. someone who may have drink/drug problems – and preventing them from losing means-tested benefits.
· Giving money to someone who already has a substantial estate – ie preventing the inheritance going directly to their estate so that they will be charged IHT upon their own death.
· Providing for beneficiaries under a discretionary trust.
